Description
All-
A group of artists and advoctes have teamed up to install eleven murals along the backs of commercial buildings along 7th Street, between the Bishop Arts District and Windomere. The goal is to create an art-filled, bike/stroller/pedestrian/child/dog friendly corridor connecting some of the neighborhoods to the Bishop Arts District and everything in between (Tyler/7th, Bolsa/Glorias, Turner House, etc.) This would be the ideal alternative to attempting to ride a bike or even walk down Davis. A total of 11 mural proposals have been prepared by local, Oak Cliff artists, and the business owners are on board with the project. As you may know, murals not only add interesting artistic character to what can be drab space, but they also act as a graffiti deterrent, which is a constant, expensive problem for many of these building owners, and unattractive to us residents. This is only phase one of our beautification project. We'll also be working with these same building owners, and perhaps some home owners, to tackle some landscaping/chain link fencing, etc. that could be cleaned up. Then we hope to add additional murals in the months and even years to come, and perhaps even get formal bike lanes or benches added along the route. To get the ball rolling on these first 11 murals, we need to raise approximately $25,000. This price includes materials for artists, prepping the backs of the buildings for the paintings, and a small fee paid to each artist that is participating. We've approached some of our repeated supporters of all things Oak Cliff, and we've come up with approximately $7,000 in under a week. Now we're hoping for some support from you! Attached is a sponsor form. There are various perks for the different levels, but I think the most notable is your portrait or business logo painted on a Donor Wall by our artists! Who wouldn't love that? We've all heard campaigns use the slogan, "There is no donation too small," and that is completely true with this project. The paint used will be exterior latex paint, which is only about $25 per gallon. If you're unable to give big, give what you can. By giving $25, you know that you brought at least 1 new color to the project! The artists will begin painting as soon as funds are secured for each one. The first official unveiling of at least some of these murals will be April 10 & 11, via Oak Cliff's 2nd Art Crawl. More details about the event will come soon, but know that Oak Cliff will be alive, hopping and BUSY that weekend! Rest up- You're going to need it! Jason Roberts and Amy Cowan Venue
